THE NORTHERN SEAS MARITIME MUSEUM NETWORK

Article 1: NAME

The name of this network shall be the Northern Seas Maritime Museum Network (NSMM). The network derives from the Association of North Sea Cities and relates to By-Laws of that Association dated April 2003. The present By-Laws for the Network express a wish to expand the activities of Network to include maritime museums in the areas around the Baltic and the North Atlantic as well as the North Sea.

 

Article 2: OBJECTIVES OF THE NSMM NETWORK

The objectives of the NSMM network are: to promote the co-operation between maritime museums and other institutions or individuals doing academic research, by organizing conferences, exhibitions, publications, research and exchanging information and staff, etc.

 

Article 3: NSMM NETWORK PARTICIPANTS

The network participants will be the maritime museums in cities of the Northern Seas (the North Sea, the Baltic and the North Atlantic). To run the network, a minimum of four participants will be required. No museum will be considered a member of the network before an agreed membership fee is paid to the secretariat of the network.

 

Article 4: NSMM NETWORK MANAGEMENT

The network will be managed by a Board consisting of one representative from each participating museum. As a minimum the Board will meet once a year. Expenses for representatives will be paid by the museums.

 

Article 5: NSMM NETWORK SECRETARIAT

The permanent secretariat of the network will be located at one of the participating museums.

 

Article 6: NORTHERN SEAS HISTORY CONFERENCES

A Northern Seas History Conference is organized by the network every second year. The museum hosting the conference is responsible for all practicalities as well as funding all costs related to the conference except the publication of proceedings which is the responsibility of the permanent network secretariat.

 

Article 7: ORGANIZING COMMITTEE

An organizing committee is appointed by the Board in relation to the holding of a Northern Seas History Conference. The organizing committee will consist of three members of the Board plus one or two persons representing institutions and/or organizations from inside or outside the network. The organizing committee is elected for a period of 2 years (one conference) and is responsible for organizing and holding the conference plus subsequent publication of conference papers. Expenses for the meetings of the organizing committee will be paid by the museums.

 

Article 8: INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF THE NORTHERN SEAS

On an annual basis it is an aim of the organization to publish a web-based and peer reviewed International Journal of the Northern Seas. The content of the journal is either original papers made directly for the journal or articles of high academic value in other languages than English that has been published in museum yearbooks et cetera. An Editor in Chief and an Editorial Board will be in charge of the journal. The Editor in Chief and the Editorial Board will be appointed by the Board for periods of 2 years. Reappointment is possible. As a minimum the Editor in Chief and the Editorial Board will meet once a year at the expense of their individual museums. All members of the network have an obligation to act as peer reviewers and to look out for new academic talents at maritime museums, universities and other institutions in their country or region. The cost of publishing the journal is financed by the secretariat of the organization.

 

Article 9: FINANCE

Every participating museum will pay an annual membership fee to the permanent network secretariat. In addition appropriate allowance should be made by each museum for annual costs in relation to administration, travel, meetings, et cetera.

 

Article 10: BY-LAW DESIGNATION

These by-laws shall be designated “The By-laws of June 2013” and shall remain in force until replaced by new by-laws as adopted by a majority vote of the network Board.
